Scribble Witch 1: Notes in Class | Book Review

By Inky Willis (published by Hachette Children’s Group)

Dear Molly,
I is Notes! Notes is me!
Bestest wishes
From Notes

Monday is always a bad day in school because Molly’s teacher, Mr Stilton, is “a bit moody” but this Monday is made even worse when Molly’s best friend Chloe tells her she is moving to a new school!

Just when she needs it, Scribble Witch, a magical kind-hearted paper doodle also known as “Notes” comes to life…but will she rescue Molly’s day, or just cause a whole lot more trouble?

‘Scribble Witch: Notes in Class’ is the brilliant first book in a new series about Molly and Notes by author and illustrator Inky Willis. It perfectly captures the atmosphere of 9-year-old Molly’s junior school, and the trials and tribulations faced by Molly and her new invisible friend as they desperately try to stop Chloe from changing schools.

I loved Molly’s “top tens” scattered throughout the book; from her top ten pencil toppers, to her top ten packed lunch disasters, which I’m sure we can all empathise with! Notes (the written kind, not the witchy kind!) are also drawn as actual notes during the chapters which is a great touch, given the nature and name of Molly’s new friend.

The pictures are bubbly and quirky, giving real life to all the characters, and Notes’ endearing – if somewhat troublesome! – nature, coupled with Molly’s determination and loyalty, have you really rooting for the pair.

With its humorous and imaginative story, I’m absolutely certain this will be a hit and I for one can’t wait to meet up with Molly and Notes again. The second book, ‘Magical Muddles’ comes out in August this year, so we don’t have too long to wait for more magical mayhem!
